TV Shows: High Potential

High Potential, Season 1 (2025) ★★★★☆

I finished watching this show last night with the last episode full of cliffhangers that were both a little exasperating (I mean, haven’t we moved past silly cliffhangers by now?) and comforting in knowing that, hopefully, this means we’re in for a season two.

All that to say I thoroughly enjoyed this quirky series. While a police procedural at it’s core, the twist is Kaitlin Olson playing Morgan Gillory, has an unconventional knack for solving crime, because she has HPI. Basically, she has a high IQ and retains everything.

Great fun, go check it now.

TV Shows: Andor

Andor, Season 2 (2025) ★★★★☆

I’ve been grappling since last night trying to decide how I feel about this one, I mean, the series as a whole. It’s difficult to compare it to season one, which had a more vibrant pace and tension. Something that was lost in season 2, what with the time jumps and the irritating gaps between events, leaving me wondering what went on in between.

I mean, seriously, why? Why do that to your audience? It really was irritating to the Nth degree, and made for disjointed viewing. One minute we’re here, with these characters and this story arc … and the next? Well, another world, another time, and a new group of faces.

And yes, while the stories of the main characters intertwined the gaps between stories stretched credibility somewhat, at least it did for me.

That isn’t to say season two was a flop, or boring, far from it. Disjointed and irritating as it was, once we moved to the mid point, the season took off and flew by so that I know in a couple of weeks time, once my thoughts have had a chance to settle, I shall go back to the beginning and watch season two all over again. And see if I get a better feeling and understanding seeing how I now know what’s coming.

It really feels like they took four season’s worth of Andor stories and squished them down into approximately 3 episodes per potential season, to collapse the whole thing down into one last mega season … except, for me, it didn’t work.

I’m left wanting more. And you?

TV Shows: The Residence

The Residence (2025) ★★★★★

This Paul William Davies scripted show—produced by Betsy Beers and Shonda Rhimes for Netflix—is one of the best Agatha Christie style murder mystery shows on TV right now.

Cleverly written, witty to a fault, with great casting and acting by all involved, The Residence (set in the White House in case you didn’t know) had me guessing who did it and and why but, by the end of every episode, changing my mind.

Whimsical, funny, clever and twisted, this one should keep you guessing and entertained right up to the end.

Highly recommended.

TV Show: Bodies

Bodies (2023) ★★★☆☆

I watched the overly long series, Bodies, so you don’t have to. This British-made Netflix limited series started off well with an intriguing premise (time travel) which I was willing to over look, as the first episode was promising. A naked body appears in 4 different times (1890, 1941, 2023, and 2053) in the exact same place in London, confounding the authorities.

And then? The whole thing slowly, and painfully unravels at a snails pace with way too much filler than was absolutely necessary. Making for a dull watch in what could have been a really taut thriller.

TV Show: Zero Day

Zero Day (2025) ★★★★☆

We just finished watching this limited series starring Robert De Niro on Netflix last night and, I have to say, other than a couple of forced and very contrived moments in the plot, this was, overall, an enjoyably psychological thriller. It certainly kept you guessing right up till the last episode about who was doing what, and why.

Some great acting, of course, from the noted stars, Bob, Joan Allen, and Angela Bassett as the president. And a decent supporting cast of identifiable baddies to boo and hiss at.

All in all, well worth watching for De Niro.

TV Show: The Recruit

The Recruit – Season 2 (2025) ★★★☆☆

This is a case of what could have been. What could have been a great second season but, as it turned out, was a hot mess of a story accompanied by a little too much graphic violence. I love me a good fight scene, really, I do. But what I don’t need to see is someone’s head being bashed in in excessive detail. Add in the incredulously unbelievable ending and Owen’s ridiculous escape (again) and, I’m out.

This one could have been darkly funny, as is, I’ve only rated it three stars.

TV Shows: Case HIstories

Case Histories – Season 1 (2011) ★★★☆☆

Oddly disturbing, graphically violent in places, and meandering in others (I mean, there’s only so much of watching this guy run that you can take before you have to ask yourself, why?) Case Histories featuring Jason Isaacs in the lead role, is a rather disjointed show about a rough around the edges PI (ex-police) who is more a walking cliche than is necessary.

It was, however, nice to see a ton of guest stars get to gripes with some wonderfully OTT performances. Otherwise, this one was a little too dramatic in all the worst possible ways.

That said, we started watching season 2 last night … it’s not much better.
