Weeknotes

This last week seems to have whizzed by and yet, it also felt like it was dragging for some reason. But here we are, starting a brand new week and, for the first time here, on this new blog (same name) I thought to do a #Weeknotes post and recap.
Goings On
We all know it’s winter, or at least it will be on the 21st. Technically still autumn (which is mind boggling in and of itself) it’s been bitterly cold here. December is usually a kinder month than most. Not so for us. While we’ve had our fair share of snow, the temperature has been as low as MINUS 25 first thing, all the way through to an almost balmy 4 degrees one afternoon.
Also, we put the finishing touches to our Christmas tree, adding a skirt and, when we wrap them, a few presents will find their way under the tree.
Monday I had yet another blood test to check my magnesium levels, it’s getting so I don’t know whether I’m coming or going. All I know is the process of booking a doctor’s appointment took on heroic efforts on our part to remain calm and not pull our hair out. However, success was an appointment for next week, yay! I’ll let you know how that one goes.
We had a bit of a panic attack mid week when I went to turn on the cold water tap in the bathroom and, nothing came out but a weird noise. It turns out there had been a burst pipe somewhere and, they had to switch our cold water off in the building for a couple of hours while a temporary fix was made. As you can see, me and mine survived such trivial first world problem.
This Sunday saw the anniversary of my father in law’s passing from cancer. He died in 2023 just before Christmas and, as such, not only is Christmas a more subdued affair for all of us, at the moment, my mother in law wanted us to all attended a mass. She’s Catholic and, while I’m not religious, I went to pay my respects, as you do, in support of a woman who’s been through a lot these last couple of years.
Despite the occasion, we had a laughter-filled afternoon at my mother in law’s.

And you, how was your week?

That’s another week done and dusted and, to be honest, I cannot for the life of me remembered anything exciting happening. The highlight of the week, Saturday, we were supposed to go to see Sarah McLachlan in concert and, barely 2 hours before we were supposed to leave the house, we got an email to say the concert was cancelled and would be rescheduled at some point, next year.
Well, of course we were both crushed but then, a lightbulb went off and we went onloine to check why. And, sure enough, saw posts on Insta and Facebook from Sarah apologising to all her fans about the cancellations. She has laryngitis and, of course, has to take care of her voice.
So, fingers crossed they managed to find a date for the concert, for next year and, preferably, not in the middle of winter please, thank you.
I had a blood test last Wednesday and, had to wait till Friday to get news that my magnesium levels were finally up in the normal level. Fantastic new, of course, but just to be on the safe side, the pharmacist issued another RX for a further blood test in two weeks to check everything again. And I’m more than happy to give the blood to keep a check on what’s happening.
And … Halloween came and went with a huge gale and rain storm here so I don’t know if any of the kids were out and about. But no one knocked on our door either Friday night or throughout the day Saturday. People usually put a pumpkin outside their door to tell kids where they can come to get candy. So now, the OH has a lot of candy they can eat. I might have to ration them to two pieces a night.
Saturday night, overnight, the clocks went back here, in Canada, to GMT (standard time) and I slept like a baby to wake at my normal hour but, having had an extra hours sleep. Lucky me. Yay!

And this week? More doctor’s appointments and possible tests, but other than that, if the weather holds, a few more walks out to the park.

It’s the start of Week 10 since my operations and I’m still (supposedly) not allowed to lift anything heavy than 10 pounds in weight. Not that I am about to weigh everything to know what it weighs before lifting it. I mean, who does that, right? So, in other words, I’m still not lifting anything including the laundry basket. Which means the OH is on call 24/7 to lift anything deemed heavy or awkward or hard to reach. This means I cannot do any household chores when they’re at work work, and not at home working.
Of course, magically on week 12, I will be mysteriously able to lift anything and everything, including, I suspect, the elephant in the room. Now won’t that be fun. Not. I wonder who comes up with these arbitrary numbers. It all seems so, unrealistic. Twelves weeks, I know, is three months and therefore, I suppose, enough time to have elapsed for my internal bits to have healed. Maybe.
This week is another busy week visiting the nurse for yet more blood tests to see if my sodium, iron and magnesium levels are doing okay. Of course, as soon as I know, I’ll let you know.
Meanwhile, this last week, despite the rainy weather and sudden drop to normal autumnal temperatures — it’s been a brisk 3-4 degrees here every morning, and an almost balmy 7 today. I did manage to get out for a couple of short walks around the park next door. And even ventured as far as the corner shop. Though with strict instructions not to buy anything heavier than a loaf of bread. Ha!
Things this week
- On Monday, as many of you know, I had an appointment with the gstro doctor for an endoscopy to check whether my ulcer was still there. And was over joyed to report, it's gone. Which meant I could stop taking at least one of the pills I've been on. Yippie.
- I started a Postroll following in the footsteps of many others. It's a fun way to share all the amazing posts I read each week/month that I want to share.
- I mentioned I was cooking Beef Bourguignon for dinner, to which, I've now promised cooking lessons to Davey Craney.
- We also scored excellent stage-facing seats for the Sarah McLachlan concert here in Quebec City, this coming Saturday.
- Saturday morning saw us both getting our Covid and flu vaccines at the same time. However, mine were free because of my health issues, while the OH had to fork out $150 for the pair of jabs. Which included all the fees and taxes.
- This Sunday was the first in two early voting days for the municipal elections here, in Quebec City. We got to vote for who we wanted for Mayor and as our local councillor. Voting is always a stab in the dark. Do you vote for the incumbent who you sort of know what to expect from or, go for one of several strangers with weird party names, whose platform sounds like a fairytale of vague promises we'll do this and we'll do that, if elected? Throw in the fact it took two and half hours to vote because of the queue, despite being told the wait was only 20 minutes. Yeah. Who organises these things?
